Last Friday I met a clever young man working on a flying contraption at our gym. He was from a high school in Southern California, and preparing for a science competition at UNL on Saturday. There were three other teams working on different projects, all for the same competition. They were using our gym just for some free space to test their inventions.
The goal for this guy’s project was to fly up to the ceiling and hover there as long as possible, with a rubber band powered craft. He made this delicate machine, and wound up a rubber band to exact torque requirements, and let it fly! It seemed to fulfill its requirements very well. I hope he did well in the competition!
Friday was also the grandkid’s last day of school! Yay! To celebrate, we went with them to an escape room in Omaha and had great fun solving all the puzzles and riddles needed to get out of the room. We finished with 13 minutes to spare! That means we got to put our names on a key and hang it on the wall.
After our successful escape, we found a cute Spaghetti place that had an old truck bed for the salad bar. A fun restaurant, a fun day! Let the summer begin!
Someday I’ll have to put up stuff about our woodcarving club… for now I’ll just put in this one picture of Kevin’s bandsaw being stored (and used!) in our garage. Very handy for getting woodcarving projects started!
The amazing news around here is the way our yard is changing! We have been working for quite a while on landscaping plans. I was hoping we could get started with the actual work a couple of weeks ago, but this week it started, and started with a bang!
First we had a Bobcat arrive and rest in our driveway.
I studied the controls in case I need to operate it! Ha! I wish…
The next day they began removing sod… all over the place. At first I wondered if we’d made a huge mistake! It looked so terrible! But once the shapes became more obvious it looked like there was hope.
In the middle of the yard we’ve planned a water feature – a bubbling rock that hopefully will look nice and also attract thirsty birds! We picked out a nice rock at the supply place, and they started drilling the hole right where we’d asked for it. We’re excited to see how it all turns out!
Meanwhile, they have been digging and shaping everywhere! Rocks, sand, and dirt have arrived in front, and the Bobcat nicely distributed them in the back.
Then trees arrived! Some fairly large trees, and several nice bushes have been arranged and planted! These guys have been working super efficiently, and a staggering amount of work has been done. Our scenery has changed dramatically, and we’re not done yet! Stay tuned!
