Big Events

What can be a bigger event than a birthday in the family? Our daughter Becky just had a birthday, and said she thought cupcakes would be better than cake, since everyone could pick whatever variety the’d like. Good idea! So we got a couple dozen assorted cupcakes, and assigned letters to most of them. Great fun! Happy Birthday Becky!

“Potluck on Prescott” has been an annual event, hosted by our church, to welcome the University students each year. They close Prescott street between the University and the Church, and set up for a huge gathering! Last year I understand they served something like 900+ people!

Cherryl and I were asked to help with the kitchen prep for this event. I was amazed at how much work, and workers, this involved! I’m glad I got to work in the kitchen, instead of setting up innumerable chairs and tables!

The organization was amazing. In the lobby of the church, five main tables were set up. These would be for the potluck food members brought. There was another table set up for “Haystacks,” (Taco Salads if you are not familiar with the term) and another table for gluten-free or vegan dishes. A dessert table was set up outside. The beauty of the system was a supply area set up between the main tables and the kitchen. As we in the kitchen finished cooking or heating up dishes, they were taken to the supply area. Each of the main tables had monitors, who if a dish was emptied, would go to the supply area and replace it with a similar dish.

When the church service ended, everyone lined up, and after prayer, the director would tell each group of guests which table they could go to. He was getting signals from someone monitoring the crowds at each table.

Everyone made it through line in only 20 minutes. Maybe this isn’t groundbreaking, but I was impressed!

The time finally came to get all the food out…

And then the fun started!

Pretty soon the tables on Prescott were full, and so were a bunch of tables on the lawn.

It was a great time! We worked hard, ate well, and the final official count was: (wait for it…) One thousand forty six people fed! A record for Potluck on Prescott!

After a big morning like that, and a bit of a rest, it seemed good to stroll around Holmes Lake. Perfect weather… I have been amazed how there can be so many cars in the park’s lots, but the place is big enough that it never seems to be too crowded. So once again, here are some pictures of the nice lake.

Another big event was visiting Becky and helping with a 2,000 piece puzzle!

Wednesday evening we hit the Lied Center for a concert with Amy Grant. We haven’t heard her for a long time, and it was great fun!

Alan and Karen came with us, and we had an awesome time. We even met up with Greg, Amy’s tour manager. He is the son of our friends Ron and Chris, who live in Colorado. We haven’t seen him in forever – probably since our kids were in high school with him. Great fun to chat with him, and enjoy the wonderful concert!

[When we first moved here, I was puzzled as to how to pronounce Lied. If it was German, it would be pronounced Leed. But maybe it was like “I’m sorry I Lied to you.” So on their website they try to answer the question, by saying it’s pronounced like “Lead.” Big help… is that Lead like a Scout Troop leader? Or Lead like the stuff alchemists tried to turn into gold? If you too are worried about this, it’s pronounced “Leed” like it should be.]

  1. Looks like you two are settling into the community nicely! What a great idea, hosting a giant potluck! I like your friends’ name, Lied, “Song” in English. You don’t seem to have forgotten much of Mr. Dutton’s German.
