Christmas Time Potpourri

I might have mentioned before that a woodcarving club meets every week at my place. Recently Alan brought an example of a cute little pig he mad for beginning carvers. Really fun! In the background on the right you can see a “Stress Relieving” bird – so smooth it feels soft and encourages you to just caress it.

I’ve never made something so smooth before, so I decided to try it. Here’s my bird… I have to decide what sort of finish to apply, but I’m nervous it will get in the way of the silky smoothness it has now. Maybe I’ll put a picture up of it when I get it done.

Kevin said it was time to put snow tires on the van, and wondered if he could use the car lift. Of course! He made it a fun learn/project by letting his kids do a lot of the work. They did really well!

And here’s the van with its new winter tires securely in place!

Friday night was the Union Adventist University Christmas Concert. Choir, band, orchestra… they even had our Lincoln Adventist Mens’ Chorus sing a couple of numbers. The whole event was marvelous! Beautiful music, expertly crafted… a gorgeous evening!

The other morning the sunrise was particularly pretty. God’s way of compensating for the cold!

Saturday afternoon four of us met to go birding. We headed for Branched Oak Lake… last time there was super cold, so we really bundled up. This promised to be similar, but turned out to be a beautiful afternoon.

The park was totally empty… except for two Bald Eagles. Yes, we saw other birds, but these guys stole the show. One flew around and down toward us, as we were leaving… just showing off.

The sunset was splendiferous. [I thought I was making up an exaggerated word, but spell checker confirmed it!]

One evening the kids from the church (including two very special grandkids) put on a little play about Christ being born in Bethlehem. They had action, music, and even three life sized camels! Very nice!

Becky is getting ready to present another Chocolate Creating class. This time is for a parent to bring a child, and create some fun chocolate. She was testing the concept with her son Peter. What he was doing was NOT exactly what her instructions were. She was tempted to “correct” him, but decided he could build what he wanted. When he finished it, he said “This is Rudolf and this is his long lost cousin Joe, the green-nosed alien.” So below are the two versions… Becky’s Rudolph on the left, Peter’s Joe on the right. Tell me which you like best!

Talking of making silly things, I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’d purchased an old model. A Jaguar E-Type, or XKE in the States. I’ve spent some fun time putting it together, and here are a couple shots of what it’s looking like so far. I’m having fun getting crazy about details. Maybe it will grow up into a real Jag!
