OK, it was probably closer to 250 Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, but it felt like a lot! We helped Vicki, Ron and lots more friends at the Matt Talbot Kitchen for homeless folks. Several gallons of canned vegetables, and our freshly made sandwiches. Ron says they’ve been doing this for many, many years. This is only our second trip, but it was fun to help out again. Ron even let me run the grill for a little bit! We were so busy making the sandwiches that I never got to go out to the dining room and greet the hungry diners. From what I could see, they enjoyed the food.
Early Sunday morning we set off on a little road trip… to Spokane. Fog shrouded the whole neighborhood, and made a rather eerie sight.
The reason for the road trip was that our motorhome was finally finished! Yay! Now all we had to do was pick it up and drive it back to our new home in Lincoln, Nebraska. We debated flying to Spokane, but we thought we’d stay a few days with our kids there, and having our own car would be handy. It could also be nice on our trip back with the motorhome. I planned on a somewhat leisurely trip back. (Which shows how easily plans can change! Details next week!)
Fort McPherson was established 15 miles east of what is now the city of North Platte, Nebraska, in 1863. The sign says the Fort’s jobs included guarding the telegraph lines, mail service and stage coach lines. They also protected the crews building the Trans-Continental Railroad. The Fort was abandoned in 1880, the site razed, and now all that is there is this nice rest area. You can read the sign if you want a little more information.
We drove two and a half long days… as we neared Spokane, we even found snow!
Down from the snowy pass, we saw signs offering Huckleberry Shakes. We decided we might as well have lunch in a place with fun deserts, so we went to the little sandwich shop, ordered our lunch, and asked about the shakes. The gal said “Oh, those are next door!” In the shop of a gas station! So we walked next door, and they really weren’t prepared to make milkshakes… maybe most folks don’t want ice cream right after driving through the snow! But we’re not most folks, so we got tiny ice cream cones. We kept saying we wanted SMALL, and she felt so bad giving us so little that she only charged us for one.
We finally got to the Cummins dealer in Spokane, and picked up our motorhome. They had it outside and plugged in, so all was good and ready. We test drove it for a while, and decided it really was done, and drove up to Loren and Karen’s home. That evening the sunset was magnificent!
While accompanying Karen dropping off her dog at the groomer’s, we walked through this beautiful block on the way to a cute coffee shop. Did I remember to shoot the cute coffee shop, or my beautiful daughter? Nope. Sigh. It was great fun, even without pictures to prove it.
I shot a couple of pictures of Bryan doing what he loves… Rubik’s cubes and Minecraft. He is phenomenal at the Rubik’s cubes… can do any of them in only a minute or two. His moves are so fast I don’t know why the cubes don’t melt!
He’s pretty good at Minecraft too! It’s a computer game I don’t understand well, but he keeps the screen moving almost a fast as the Rubik’s cube.
So what is this?? It’s Ben & Tiffany’s personal outdoor ice rink! I got to help some when they were first building it, but they keep enhancing it. A lot of hockey is played here! I went with Loren, Ashlyn and Bryan to meet up with Tiffany, and her two sons, Eli and Caleb.
These kids can really skate! Fun to watch them zoom across the ice!
Ben has built everything except a Zamboni… so the hockey players smooth up the ice they carved by skating in circles and then throwing the “snow” off the far side of the rink.
The huge barn beside the rink has a changing room, and enough skates and equipment to open a skate shop!
I caught Karen vacuuming the dog’s rug… While really a clever way to hold the rug while cleaning it, it was amusing!
I got to help Karen make whole wheat cinnamon rolls… what fun and super tasty too!
Friday night we had a veggie hot dog roast with the family and good friends Jeffrey, Brooke, and Wyatt. It was cold, clear and wonderful!
After dinner there was time for a little music… A great way to end the day!
In church we saw a beautiful thought written by Helen Keller. I think we all can be thankful in the same way!
