Olympic National Park was our home for most of the week.
Well, actually we stayed in LaPush, a small village on the North West coast of Washington. The borders of Olympic National Park are very irregular, so one minute you’re in the park and the next minute you’re not. Whatever, it’s all very pretty.
Once we got settled in this campsite, our rig was facing the beach – only a short walk around or over a million driftwood logs.
Hundreds of Brown Pelicans hung out in this corner of the beach.
In case you are already bored, as I seem to be in picture below, you have a problem. Because most of the following pictures are of the same beach. The lighting kept changing, so I was obligated to shoot more pictures. So I won’t comment much, just to tell you of the dozens I DIDN’T put up!
James Island is the main bunch of rocks we gazed at all week. It’s kind of an Indian Sacred site, so I don’t think you’re supposed to climb on it. And the cool weather and strong waves discouraged our kayak usage anyway.
At the end of town is the little marina. Mostly fishing craft.
I think this restaurant was featured in the “Twilight” TV show… I’ve never seen the show so wouldn’t be able to verify this fact.
Our campground from a distance… If those rocks are named, I don’t know them well enough to know those names.
One morning the Coast Guard was out practicing maneuvers in heavy waves. The guys in the boats got a pretty hairy ride!
Towards the end of the week it was about time to leave…
We decided to drive farther than we usually do in a day, to get back to Spokane with just two day’s driving. I called a place in Vantage, Washington for reservations that evening. They said “No problem, just show up! We have plenty of room.” We had to do a few errands on the way, and met with lots of road construction and heavy traffic through Tacoma. When it was obvious we’d be after 5pm, I called again. Usually campgrounds will say they close the office at 5 or 6, but will leave info for us at the office door. This gal said “No problem – we’re here till 10pm! Just give me a call when you arrive, and I’ll come down and check you in.” We arrived about 8:30, after dark, (something I HATE to do) and called. And called. Four or five times; just an answering machine. She never called back. I wasn’t about to guess where to park in the campground, especially in the dark, so we elected to park in front of the office. We slept well, and got up and underway early in the morning. I never talked to the office!
Next week: back in Spokane!
